UMGS Alarmed by New National Curriculum
A group of geography students (at bachelors and masters level) and graduates, co-ordinated by the University of Malta Geographical Society (UMGS) have compiled a report about the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2011 (currently in its consultation phase) proposed by the National Curriculum Review Committee.
The report focuses on highlighting the fact that there appear to be inconsistencies in the new curriculum proposed by authorities with regards to Geography. This is because the Maltese and English versions of the NCF, and a parliamentary question (PQ 28679, Sitting No. 391 - 11/10/2011 06:00 PM, Legislature XI asked by Hon. Joe Mizzi MP entitled Kurrikulu Minimu Nazzjonali - suġġett tal-ġeografija) seem to contradict each other on the role of Geography in secondary schools.
In the Parliamentary Question it seems to suggest that Geography will remain a subject that can be chosen between the first and the third years of secondary schooling. However, the report itself fails to list it as one of the other suggested areas of studies which schools may choose to offer between form three and five. [read full article here]
